We hightailed it up to the north west border to Sopron, a quaint Gothic town, and one of the few never to have been conquered by the Turks, so the medieval town still stands relatively intact.  Bizarrely it's also known by the Austrians as 'Dentist Town', with surgeries everywhere. They apparently hop over the border to get their 'work done' at a fraction of the price back at home.  Full of weird and useless information, aren't we?

Just east of town is Esterhazy castle, a Versaille-esque (is that a word?) extravagance built by "Miklos the Ostentatious" (no really, that was what he was called!)  They have just finished renovating it, just as it would have been when royalty came to visit over 200 years ago.  The only difference from its heyday in the 18th century was the couple of Aussie backpackers having a full-on picnic in the gardens for the afternoon!
