Still more stunning scenery further down the coast, and we stopped at a small town with a harbour, and found a local taverna in an old stone building with home-made wine (which incidentally got better after the first glass!). The owner brought out his own prosciutto (much, much better) and we got chatting to an Austrian guy and his brother-in-law and had a couple more. Franz had his yacht moored in the harbour and spent half the year cruising around the Adriatic, and invited us on his boat the next morning.
Now, one thing about Croatia that we had been told by a few people we had met. Free camping (ie. parking up at the side of the road/ by the beach/ scenic lookouts etc which we do every night), while it is illegal in a few countries, most cops just turn a blind eye if you're not a nuisance. In Croatia, though, we were told they are very officious about it and move you on in the middle of the night. So since we had been in the country we had been hunting out the most obscure park spots where no one would know we were there. We just couldn't bring ourselves to stay at a 'concentration camp site' on this trip. Just not our style plus given we have a hot water shower, toilet, power etc and everything else we need we just can't justify $30+ a night for a piece of grass with other people 5 metres away. So we had already cased out a spot on the edge of town, but here's the other catch - Croatia has zero tolerance drink driving laws (ie. no alcohol whatsoever). Anyway, we woke up 7am the next morning in the spot, Karen with the keys in her pocket, and very little idea how we got there!!! Brad reckons Karen's logic was that if she lost her licence then she would be off the hook for having to drive any of the rest of the way! ......Oops, that one's not to be repeated!
So, hungover and with tongues like sandpaper we met up with Franz and Helmut on the boat - what a palatial yacht - definitely how to travel in style. Such nice guys. After we left them we had the morning after junk food frenzy, which involved us going to the local supermarket to buy hamburger patties, all the condiments and fresh rolls. We'd had a van fry up by 11am.........and then promptly stopped an hour later to cook it all again!! What is it about hangovers and never being able to satisfy the hunger?
