Flag of Greece  , Ionian Islands,
Thursday, July 3, 2008

As soon as we crossed the border into Greece, we saw smooooooooooth.  Yes, smooth roads, people that could drive (well, a bit better anyway), green rolling hills, signposts, and what we had missed for the past month or so...........a good hypermarket.  Yes, not to be under-rated, a good wander around a massive hypermarket for at least an hour and half is a perverse pleasure of ours.  Plenty of time to "ooh" and "aah" over weird and wonderful foodstuffs and stock up on all the main staples (OK, so we're easily pleased, what can we say?)

We were in Greece only for a few days to catch up with Brad's friend Nick from uni and his girlfriend Catherine, who were out visiting Nick's parents on the island of Lefkada.  We had a great few days, driving around little coves, stopping at local tavernas for obligatory tsaziki, giros and Greek salad fixes.  Food was great, plus a swim or two, few drinks, coffees etc.  The Ionian Sea there is again really clear and calm, even better when we were on Nick's parents' verandah looking at it with picturesque mountains in the background with a glass of Veuve and the only sounds being the crickets and cicadas in the distance.  Nick's Dad also took us to his local village of Nikiana for their annual festival night - traditional Greek dancing and music and more than a few 'Mythos'. Another great 'break' for us and again it felt like a 'holiday within our holiday' and really good to spend time with fun, likeminded people.
