Back on the mainland, we hugged the coast down to Dubrovnik, which was a great finale to Croatia. Just when we thought we may be 'walled town'-ed out, this place was the perfect antidote.  Originally a 6th century fortified port built by the Venetians, it has such a long and interesting history, culminating in its unnecessary bombing by the Serbs during the war here.  Interestingly, the Croats used the bombing of Dubrovnik as PR against them, but the Serbs maintain that the bombing was on a small scale and the Croats burnt tyres and drums of oil to make it look ransacked so they could claim money to rebuild a lot of run-down buildings. Either way, massive UNESCO funding enabled the authentic restoration of the city, and today, apart from the look of newer tiles on some of the roofs, you'd never know.  The ramparts and walls of the city are unbelievable, and most people walk on the top of them around the whole city.  Inside are great monuments, churches, cafes and restaurants.  Really, one of the highlights of Croatia for us.

Next stop - Montenegro........................ Alleyway Dubrovnik
Alleyway Dubrovnik
. but first.... the scores for Croatia.

They do a good : Island, a fat middle aged German in too small a size bathers, Adriatic clear blue water, boating experience, old walled town, surfaced road

They don't do a : Cheap......anything (the whole country's more expensive than the rest of E. Europe so far), a good cheese, soft drink, or laundrette (try finding somewhere to wash your stuff), free wifi access (always an important consideration for freebie hackers like ourselves), friendly shopkeeper (or friendly anyone - the least friendliest country we've ever visited), or cheap wine that's drinkable
