Only a one night stop over here on the West coast of the Yucatan on my way to Merida and then Cancun. This is a beautiful little colonial port city with a rich Spanish history. There are lots of remnants on the outskirts of the centro from the wall built around the city sometime during the 15th Century. As you can see in the photos the houses are painted in very lovely pastel colors and the tile work on the floors of the old buildings is amazing. Some of them even look like rugs. The architecture has lots of high sweeping ceilings and rounded doorways and a feeling of a bygone era. Very lovely but not lovely enough to keep me from getting to the beach.
You could see the difference in the climate pretty quickly once on the road out of Palenque and towards Campeche. It has a very flat, scrubby (but green) feel to it. Some of the least interesting driving thus far.
Hopefully more interesting stuff in future posts. Just wanted to include a few photos here.
