After a great breakfast of pancakes that Karla kindly got up early and made for us we were on the road to Mississippi and the town of Jackson where we would be staying for the night.
We had a good cool run aided by riding through heavy fog for over an hour. About 60 miles out of Jackson we refuelled and grabbed lunch in a roadhouse. After a prolonged wait for our food we exited to see that heavy clouds had crept closer and rain wasn't far away once again.
Happy to pull into the hotel carpark just as heavy raindrops begin to fall, once again we had lucked in with the weather and high-fived each other.
Looking outside the window at the pouring rain we decided to stay in and get takeaway and watch a movie. It turned out to be an Aussie movie "The Hunter" which was pretty good and set in Tasmania which we both love. (later on the news we saw that a water funnel had been seen in our area and that a tornado alert had been posted).....had we had the TV locally tuned (and not wi-fi'd through Glen's laptop we would have seen this warning in order to prepare)
I then headed next door and got a calzone to zap and their most expensive drop, a $5.95 red wine!!
Glen had ordered a pizza and liked the idea of a red to match it and headed over to grab a bottle.
Over to him to finish the story.................................
Well, not much we could have done about the tornado and water-spout in the area I think....kiss the bikes good bye I guess!
So, not daunted by Cliff's choice of Cabernet Sauvignon for dinner - I decided to see what else they had..... (if you've seen Sideways you'll know why wine can be a fickle thing and I wasn't ready to settle for a Cab Sauv.....or a Merlot for that matter....the Calzone should have been paired with a Shriaz - just like the pizza:) ..........Oh I forgot to mention.....we were shopping at the Dollar General, so variety was bound to be limitless. For my Aussie friends, I'll cut and past my favorite bit from the Wiki-link above - "Dollar General stores are typically in small shopping plazas or strip malls in local neighbourhoods. The stores tend to locate in smaller communities than those where Walmart would go....." Cliff fails to mention that I asked 'texted' him to request two bottles of their finest.....he returns with one.....So I was a bit miffed at no Shiraz, and the return of Cliff with one bottle only, slightly traumatised by the near miss with the water spout I headed over for the second bottle.
Okay, so your intrepid wine-love was greeted with the same brands as Cliff, all 'one' of them. The last choice was a Merlot........ So I grabbed it and went to line-up...... only to be standing behind the 'Queen of Coupons' and today was her day to cash in - 18 bags of laundry powder, 27 containers of bleach, 13 tubs of margarine, three arguments with the store clerk and 30mins later....... I finally get my turn.
I felt like I'd won first prize, me, my $5.95 bottle of wine (plus tax) - I had the exact change all ready, my statement prepared that I would like to buy this fine bottle, my ID was ready to go in case of being asked, no I didn't need a bag.......and....... was greeted with .... "Sir, we don't sell liquor on Sunday past 5.30pm"......I checked my watch, hoping that the officious and smug look on her face would be soon wiped by my vastly superior ability to tell the time.....6.05pm......Arrrgh!!
Quick.....what could I do, I replied "I'm not from around here......can you make an exception?" She glared or smiled....I couldn't tell which as by now everything was getting hazy in the white rage of my frustration.... "Clearly, and no I can't" .....I was about to stammer a reply along the lines of wine not being a liquor, more of food group of the grape variety and in fact Merlot.....didn't even really count......but I just walked out of there, tail between my legs and began the walk of shame to Cliffy to ask him if I could now have a glass of his finest drop.....that I ridiculed earlier. Kindly soul, he shared it to the last drop.
