So it was a day unlike any other....we left Sturgis in the morning - the concerts the previous night were great - we didn't have too much of a late night, but seeing big headline acts like 'Loverboy' (go you 1980s lovers!!), 'Journey' (need no intro) and 'Saving Abel' ; we also managed to catch a great band called "The Living Deads' lots of fun and bass - good rockabilly sound....
Anyway, we knew we'd have a few miles to cover today (about 440 miles to be exact), so we made an early start.....kinda around 10am.....bit of trouble with my bike, I think the dust got into the fuse box as it was shorting a bit - anyway, worked on it, sorted it (sort of) and managed to get a work around to get going....left campground at 10am.....got through Sturgis and on the road at 11am....1hr to go 10 miles.....lots of bikes (see previous post)
Anyway, the aim of our trip today (apart from getting to Billings MT) was to go see the Devils Tower - a great monlthic structure of great significance to the Native Americans (Lakota tribe and others). You may also remember the image from 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' - either way it's an impressive structure (see pictures).
Well after seeing the Devils Tower, we decided to take the more scenic route into Billings - hmmm parts of Wyoming are scenic and parts aren't......given that the temps were 95+F and climbing.....no amount of scenery could make the okay parts look good....Anyway... we literally ended up in the middle of nowhere......so named as "The Spotted Horse".
Apparently a decent watering hole for thirsty bikers during the Sturgis rally, we managed to run into a few guys (and gal) who were making an annual trip for the rally. They were all wearing yellow shirts - known as "The Hamsters" - a very select and special group of riders; and, after hearing our strange accents and story about travelling the USA - they invited us in for a beer... on their dollar - sweet!! ..... this is what riding is all about ! :)
Well we had a great time - and it was awesome meeting all of them - a great bunch of people - Lee, Rick, Sue, Mike and John....a tight team and a great way for Cliff and I to have a break.
Team Hamster - if you're reading this - we'll be happy to repay the favour in Florida or in Australia - your choice, hope to stay in touch and ride safe
Sturgis was a Harley feast, 98% of the 50000+ bikes that we saw were Hogs
We got woken at around 4am in the tent by a big thunderstorm but we only got the edge of it so all good. Getting on the road and out of town was not for the faint hearted as the roads were just packed with bikes.
Getting out we went out and had a look at Devils Tower then covered some very hot and long plains looking for some shade to stop under and eat our lunch. After over an hour riding like this we came upon 'The Spotted Horse' with a population of 2!! Seeing some other bikes parked in the same spot we got talking and ended up being shouted a cold ale inside and enjoyed a great chat with Lee, Sue, Rick, John and Mike who were great people also out for a ride.
One of the joys of motorcycling are these chance meetings and it certainly gave Glen and i a lift, cheers Hamsters :))
