The Black Hills and Mt Rushmore

From Glen:

Had a great night's sleep as for a change we didn’t have 400miles to ride today – I think a direct line between Deadwood and Sturgis is about 15 miles; with that said we are here to do some great rides and that is exactly what we did!

We stayed downtown central Deadwood – what a great and historic place (see separate post)

Mid-morning rise and out the door and on the bikes heading South on Route 385 – Cliffy and I have synched our iPod playlists so this morning was his choice and a very good choice it was – Neil Young and Crazy Horse (Crazy Horse monument is close by also). Sun was shining, absolutely bikes everywhere so we both needed to keep our head on a swivel. With that said, we slotted in-between and behind several groups of riders and just cruised with 'Cinnamon Girl’ playing in our seriously was bike bliss; any and all troubles faded away and for the time being, it was me, the bike, tunes and the rolling green and craggy tops of the Black Hills.

We toured some more and did what is commonly known as ‘Custer’s Loop’ (as in General Custer and his last stand) and we took in the ‘Needles’ Highway, so called for the stone monoliths jutting out of the ground as you tour through the forest. After some great twistys and some scenic views we stumbled upon an absolute oasis. You see, bikers are a funny mob and often congregate in droves, but as we were finishing one of our runs, we came across a small lake, with a table in the shade, an old guy fly fishing for trout and a mother and daughter playing in the one else (if you see the video of how busy it was– you’ll understand why we were surprised). In we whipped; grabbed two beers that had been chilling in our backpack and sipped them in the shade and chatted about the great ride we just had. More miles ahead...... til then, Cheers – GG

From Cliff

Was great to have a sleep in till about 07.30 and have an easy morning before setting off around 10am. Bikes everywhere as you will see from Glens video and a really beautiful area that we rode through including doing the loop around Mount Rushmore which is a rocky mountain with the Presidents heads carved into it. Considering the thousands of bikes doing the same thing we actually got the road to ourselves and  enjoyed some beautiful corners.  Saw a wild deer and a bison in the park and had a really enjoyable ride.

Am now sitting in a really nice tapas bar in Rapid City (Manchego) with a cold ale in the aircon prior to us heading out to Sturgis where we pitch the tent for the next two nights and get into the motorbike rally where it will be hot and rather crazy.

After Sturgis we have some fantastic country to ride through and 8 nights with no rest break which shall be the longest of the entire trip.  By that I mean it will be ride/sleep/ride/sleep etc.  It will be some of the best riding of the trip and I cannot wait for it!!

We shall check in again next most likely from Billings which is where we are staying Tuesday night.  I hope that everybody reading this is happy and well and I look forward to catching up sometime from September with you.  Cheers Cliff

P.S. Neil, I see Richmond finally had a win after a couple of near misses and if anybody at work reads this mention to Mick Owen that the Sharks didn’t show up against the Chiefs.
