In case you hadn't noticed, this is a bulk posting (there are two new posts preceding this one) and as we head deeper into the jungle, I don’t expect to be able to update again for a while…

For Nicky’s birthday, I splurged a little (a lot) for a party with a Jungle theme... in the jungle. We are booked at the Hotel Chan Kah in the master suite.  The suite is palatial and we feel like square pegs in round holes… except for Adam who wonders why we don’t stay in places like this more often.   I arranged ahead of time for Nicky to have a piņata and birthday cake.  Again, we are some of the only guests here so all the staff came out to watch the kids hit the Winnie-the-Pooh piņata by the pool.  Nicky actually broke the stick.  It was lots of fun when the hombre holding the rope would pull the piņata up at the last second.  Eventually, it rained enough candy to rot a dozen kids’ teeth.

The view from our patio is the rainforest.  We can hear the nearby creek and see peeks of it through the trees.  We’ve spotted an animal of some sort a few times but still can’t name it.  It looks like a cat with no ears and no tail, but it hops more like a rabbit and kind of looks like a giant, skinny guinea pig.  Then at dinner, a possum scampered down a tree not 15 feet from our table.

The well known ruins of Palenque are grand and certainly more crowded than the lesser known Xochicalco southwest of Mexico City.  There are many guides (both official and non) and vendors and we did do some shopping.  The kids now have all their 'friend’ gifts.  The weather was overcast and cool with occasional light rain.  We thought it was perfect.  I’m sure we’re blessed by the rain gods because, once again, the real rain (rainforest rain) didn’t start until we got back to our beautiful COVERED patio.  The sound of the rain has drowned out the sound of the creek despite it rushing a little harder than before.  It is so beautiful… and apparently too cold for the bugs because they’re not too bad.

Wow! Sounds like you guys are having an AMAZING trip. Some of the places you have been staying sound out of this world. Happy Birthday Nick! Rachel and I wanted to let you know that it is your "Golden Birthday" - turning 11 on the 11th. Rachel had hers last year and said Golden Birthdays are awesome. I look forward to mine. May the adventure continue - in a GOOD way :)
