Wuhan: Quick stop before Hong Kong
Entry 11 of 32 | show all | print this entry |
So we got the bus from Yichang to Wuhan, and it only took 4 hours, but yet again I failed to get any sleep, just dosed a little, 'rested my eyes'. We were dropped off in the middle of the city at 5 in the morning. Nothing was open, it was dark and completely dead. There were a few taxi drivers waiting at the bus stop so we tried to tell one where we wanted to go. This was quite a challenge as our hostel was on a road, two of which exist in the city both in different districts. We managed to work out which one, and then we were off, a long ride across the city. The flag fall on the taxi was just Y3! Every city it just keeps getting cheaper (Y10 in Beijing, Y6 in Xi'an), but being a stupid hour of the morning the per km fee wasn't as cheap as usual. We got to the area we wanted to be in though we couldn't find the hostel. The driver stopped at a hotel to ask without any luck, however at the next hotel we were more successful. They didn't know where it was either, but Claire had managed to find the number for it on the internet when we were in Chongying, so the hotel called them and got directions. Two minutes later we were there, checked in and heading to bed to catch up on some sleep. Again, I had a whole dorm room to myself; Wuhan isn't really a popular destination for travellers, and for me it was simply a stepping stone to get to Hong Kong.
I wish there was more to do there as the hostel was one of the best I've been to so far. Really spacious, friendly and genuine staff, and good cheap food (A meal cost me Y6 = 45p). I didn't get up to much whilst I was there and I organsied my train to Guangzhou for the next day (I could then get an express bus to Hong Kong), and chilled out. I could have spent a few days there really, but I needed to get to HK as early as possible so that I had more time afterwards in China to go see Yunan province in the far west just below Tibet.
The next day I bought some food for the train, watched a DVD and then headed for the train. Yet again I ended up running for it, leaving just minutes to spare.
Next stop, Hong Kong!
The adventure continues...
