Chas picked me up, and drove me to REI - to get my water filter replaced. We hit up the grocery store for my resupply, and headed to the house. I went through my pack, fixed a few things, got the food bag filled, washed my clothes and took a shower. Clean and feeling civilized again :-). She and her daughter dropped me back off at Uncle Johnny's yesterday afternoon. After grabbing an unexpected bite to eat, and waiting for friends - we night hiked out last night.
Woke up by the stream, right before sunrise. I cowboy camped last night, so was able to just stare straight up at the tree tops, as the sun came up. Great way to start the morning.
Did a quick 1.5 miles to the shelter, ate breakfast and caught up with some friends.
Decided to do a short day, only 13 miles to the next shelter
The hike today was pretty intense, long up hills - combined with hot weather, made for a tiring time. Nice views, but was just miserably hot! Felt good get into camp and fall asleep.

The skies started off clear, but downpours were in the schedule for around 12 .
Nice scenery throughout the short 12 mile day. Nothing too great, just cool weather and the start of small plants/flowers pushing their way through the forest ground.
I arrived at Clyde Smith Shelter around 12:30. It began to rain, the wind kicked up something nasty - and so it was, I would stay there and wait for night to come.
We all sat around and talked about the rain.....about how we didn't think it was a safe idea to hike out in the weather, due to the elevation and high winds (yes..we know, we were just trying to be okay our laziness....and being sissies of the rain!).
It turned into a afternoon of naps and eating :-)

Woke up before the sun, hiked out on the climb to Roan High Knob Shelter. Was freezing cold, the was blowing hard, and the ground was covered in ice and frozen mud.
At least the sunrise was amazing, the light filtered through the trees/fog like golden spikes of light
Top of Roan mountain was cool, the shelter has a real door, more of a giant play house :-)
The trip to the big red barn was cool, you could easily sleep 40 people in it......lots of room! Who ever is maintaining this barn is doing an awesome job - thank you!
As we headed up the bald, the wind was blowing hard enough to knock us over, I was using my hiking poles to keep from getting blown over.........at least it is not sleeting, like the last time :-)
The trail turned from smooth pack, easy trekking, into rocky-off camber trekking. That is when I heard a snap/pop out of my right foot. It will hurt later tonight - and swell up tomorrow.
Finally arrived at camp on the NC/TN border. Fintch/Tortoise/Just Jay/Double R, and a few others here at camp! Long time, no see - was great to catch up.
I put up my tent, met up with some good friends, made a few calls home - before my battery died, and then relaxed a while. 21 miles today!

Woke up to cows mooooooooing
Ran into Forrest, Rock, Joe Cool, Bushea, Safety, B-Man, Blue, and Coda the dog - first thing.
There was a couple doing trail magic on the trail :-) - Happy Feet and Rain Cloud were their names! Awesome couple, and they had Yoo-Hoo with them :-)
Ate and drank for a while, then headed to the hostel a half mile down the road. Great little place, there is a farm and farm animals here.
After a fast shower, I looked at my right foot, it is swelled and bruised across the top.....not sure what went south....but it will not keep me from hiking. Will worry about this later, maybe 75 miles, when Damascus arrives.
The group headed to town for a bite to eat. I had a 1 pound beef burger, with bacon/ham/lettuce, onions, and onion rings on it.......was great, was truly stuffed!
After returning to the hostel a hiker and I wrote to the pack company, Arcteryx, about them not taking care of the warranty issue on his pack! Less then 400 miles on his pack - and they are not standing behind their product! Hopefully they will refund his money the wrongfully charged him - for the wrong part.....and fix the product under warrenty, without charging him money - like they are doing as of now.
The group helped me cut my hair, came out great looking - well as great as this mop can look.
We then went and watched Happy Gilmore - a true classic!
