Where I stayed
First major stop of the day was at Melrose Vineyards. We did the 6 wine sample that ended with having closer to 7 or 8. Got some cool wine glasses out of the deal and a bottle of wine for the road, which we are going to be drinking sometime in San Fransisco.
After the winery, we drove the backroads to highway 40, which had lots of blind hairpin turns with drops and sudden rises. I loved driving that portion as I got to open the car up a bit, but Nikki had problems keeping her tummy down, and was feeling a little ill. Wimp.
We ended up going north to North Bend to see the sand dunes, which are pretty cool. Saw the Arctic Challenger sitting the harbour rusting away. Not sure of the significance of the ship, but it looked fairly important sitting there.
After North Bend, we drove south towards our final destination of Crescent City, but didn't see much of the ocean along the way. Could definitely see the different clouds that were coming in from that direction and there was a distinctive sea salt smell in the air. The car's temperature went from 27C on one side of the mountains to 16 on the other, so we knew we were close. Once we got to Port Orford we saw someone painted Ocean view this way, so we took that and it dead-ended in the ocean. WOW. Amazing view and the sound of the ocean is something else. We stopped a couple of times along the highway to take pictures as well. One of these stops, we could walk along the beach, so I wanted to touch the ocean. Walked up and stuck my hands into the water and then started walking away. Apparently, the ocean wanted to touch me back as I was walking back up the beach. I ended up running pretty quickly from that rogue wave.
Got into Crescent City about 8pm and feeling pretty weary from the long drives. Ate at another Italian restaurant since it was one of the only restaurants open after 8pm. What is the deal with that. It was okay, but the wines from there were pretty decent. I had the Concannon Syrah, and Nikki had a Mondavi Cab-Sav (which was better of the two).
