On Tuesday night, October 8th, we got back from Melk and found out that we didn't have class or anything the next day. So, we planned a spur of the moment trip to Salzburg. We hopped on the Eurail on Wednesday morning after class and took a 3 hour train ride to Salzburg. We had about 6 hours in the town before we had to make it back to the train station to catch the train back to Vienna.
It was a great, relaxing day and we just got off the train and got a map of Salzburg and started walking towards the older part of town. We stopped at a cafe and had a nice lunch. We all got different types of escalope. I had a turkey escalope baked with cornflakes. It was delicious. Then we walked to the Danube and spent some time taking pictures on the bridge. It was a gorgeous day..65 degrees, sunny, blue skies. We couldn't have asked for more beautiful weather. We decided to walk up the hill to the famous Hohensalburg Fortress. One of the locals told us that it is the most visited tourist attraction in all of Austria. I can't describe how amazing the view was. It was literally the most beautiful view I've ever seen in my life ( I know that with the trips I have planned for the next 2 months, this might quickly change). We could see the Danube River, the snowcapped mountains in the distance, the town below and all of the trees with orange and red and yellow fall leaves. It was simply breathtaking at every spot of the fortress that we looked out from. I can't explain it. This is a place I want to come back to years from now and share with family or friends.
I'll write more later..
