Kayaking in Noosa Everglades

It was ANZAC day on Friday so Iain had a long weekend off work. We all headed up to Noosa with Sally's friend Hayley for some kayaking. Along the way I got to see my first Big Thing: The Big Pineapple! We got to Noosa heads and went for an afternoon walk around the headland where I also got to see my first Koala.
We were up early on Saturday morning and headed over to Boreen Point to pick up the kayaks. We had 2 two-man kayaks complete with all the camping gear and most importantly 2 eskies (ice boxes). We had a long paddle ahead of us since Iain had booked campsite 8 on the Noosa river, which was over 21km away! The first bit of the journey was across a shallow lake, however after an hour or so we were on the Noosa river and the Everglades. We had to paddle upstream, but fortunately the river was slow moving so it wasn't too difficult. We had a few breaks along the way including a visit to Harry's Hut. It turned out that we had the Rolls-Royce of kayaks, especially compared to all the metal canoes that most people had rented. We were certainly faster on the water than most people.
By late afternoon we reached our campsite. We thought it would be just us, but it turned out that 3 other people were staying there. They had to move their tents to give us enough room since it was such a small site. I think they were a bit jealous of our flashy kayaks, and definitely jealous when we got the cold beers out and Iain started cooking our rissoto dinner. We certainly camped in style.
The next morning we were up quite early and I wasn't exactly looking forward to another 21km back to base. But we packed up camp, loaded the kayaks and set on our way. I had two blisters on my left hand although they didn't hurt too much. We actually covered the distance faster than I expected. We stopped to go swimming and to have lunch, but by the time we got back to Lake Cootharaba my arms were tired and we were all paddling a lot slower. I was happy when we reached Elanda Point and even more happy when we got to the pub in Boreen Point for a well earned cold beer!
We were really lucky with the weather and it was a great weekend, but it took a couple of days for my arms to recover.
