Melbourne

After my short camping trip it was nice to be back in a hostel with a decent bed. I spent a few days around Melbourne seeing the sights. I went to the local IMAX, which has the largest cinema screen in the world, to see the new U23D film. The U2 concert was mainly recorded in Buenos Aires and it was a great experience to see the 3D film. The 3D effect was fairly good if you kept your head horizontal... as soon as you start to tilt to the side you get a weird "shadow". The sound was really good, although I guess no substitute for seeing a live concert.
The next day I got arrested at the Old Melbourne Gaol. It was part of an experience to see what it is like to get arrested and locked up in a prison cell (my first and hopefully only time!). The prison itself has been left as it was last used and contains some colourful graffiti on the walls. A separate part of the gaol is set up as a museum and describes some of the previous guests, including a number of killers. Perhaps the most famous was Ned Kelly, an infamous bushranger, who was hanged in the gaol 1880.
I also went to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. There was a special exhibition on about the history of computer games, complete with a huge range of playable original arcade machines. I spent a few hours playing Pong, Asteroids, Pacman, Donkey Kong, Star Wars and Tron. It was good fun until the school kids turned up at lunchtime!
I enjoyed Melbourne although it didn't quite live up to my expectations. Everybody seems to rave about how Australian it is and it is apparently much nicer to live in than Sydney, but to me I could have been in anywhere in the world. It lacks a city icon like the Sydney Opera House, Christ the Redeemer or the Eiffel Tower.
