I arrived in Lima on Tuesday and a group of us went out to celebrate a fellow traveller's birthday. Plenty of opportunity to try Pisco, the national drink of Peru. I guess neat pisco tastes a bit like a brandy/grappa and has quite a warming effect. Pisco sours are the most common drink which is pisco, lemon juice and egg whites... not too bad really. Certainly better than mixing Pisco with Inca Kola which is NOT recommended!

Lima is a big city with a lot of slums and poverty around the outskirts. The center has some nice colonial buildings and large squares. We watched the changing of the guard at the Presidential Palace at midday, which involved some comical goose-step marching and a brass band. The security guards kept checking the their watches and mobile phones, so nowhere near as professional as Buckingham palace.

There wasn't much else to see apart from the original headquarters for the Spanish Inquisition from 1570-1820. There was no english information so the highlights were the wax-works in the torture chambers.
