Our first stop was Niceville up in the panhandle. (Actually, our first stop was Sonny's BBQ in Ocala for a BBQ pork platter and a bowl of fried okra - yum!)  Just to answer the question before it is asked - No, not everyone is nice in Niceville.  But it is pleasant enough and a short drive across the bridge from Destin which has some of the best beaches in the country.  Sugar white sand and blue green water.  We visited family, at Appilachicola oysters and shrimp.  Terri cooked some thick, juicy, all-American size steaks for dinner one night and she also made biscuits and gravy with grits for breakfast one morning.  Why is this trip so much about the food???

We also did some shopping.  Every store was having huge sales.  We got 40% off at Banana Republic and 60% at Bass.  Stores aren't selling much in this economy which works in our favor since we have things we need to buy.  You can see other effects of the economy as well.  So many houses are for sale and many are in foreclosure or trying to avoid it by selling short.  Lots of people are being laid off from their jobs and since we've been in the US we've noticed that the TV is full of commercials for debt restructuring or help with forelcosures.  It's sad to see and makes us feel fortunate of the position we are in at the moment.  Everything headed south just after we moved but we're doing our best to spend some money and stimulate the economy while we're here.
