April 10th: Bremen, Germany
Entry 32 of 80 | show all | print this entry |
Soisn't up an left Arhus, Denmark bright and early to catch a 8:00a train to get myself to Hamburg, Germany at a decent time. Made some ham & cheese toast with my left over groceries for breakfast in the kitchen as well as a grilled cheese for the road.
Had to take several trains...thought i was going to be able to take a direct according to my book but was informed by the ticket agent "you can't go by that timetable" even though thus far it has been spot on! so had to take a train from Arhus to Frederica, from there to Padlborg, from there to Hamburg, whew!
on the train to hamburg i realized i had been getting hotter and hotter on all the diff trains so since my compartment was empty and the snack cart guy had just gone by to the next compartment i did a quick changeroo and dropped all the multi layers and got into thin pants and tshirt, whew that felt good! sun had been shining away all day so it was warm! and boy was spring here! things were green and blooming along the way.
on the way i decided i did not want to stay in Hamburg...wasn't reading anything impressive about it as well as hadn't heard anything positive about it from anyone to that point. so i found a little town called Bremen about an hour train from Hamburg. So took the train there and while in first class compartment came across a young lady with a huge backpack a baby in a front pack and her grandmother in tow. turns out she did an exchange program in her 11th grade to Seattle, WA and that her host family is coming to visit her soon. her baby is almost 4 months old and was cute to see them interact...she must have been in her mid 20's. we chatted abit, i asked about traditional foods to try and she said that they really ate usual stuff like Italian, sausages, potatoes, etc., nothing unique really she thought. and even had her ask her grandmother what traditional deserts or pastries i should try and they couldn't come up with anything that i couldn't find in any other country! ha.
so got off my train, got my bearings and a map and took a tram to my youth hostel...which was along the river with an excellent view and a rooftop terrace to boot! very nice and clean and modern place...aside from the fact that there were a bunch of 13-16 year olds staying at the place making a bit of a racket! ha.
so, had a beer on the terrace(, oh and it was a Becks which by the way found out while buying it that Bremen is the home of the Becks brewery! loads of diff flavors we have never seen)..but the sun decided to go behind a huge cloud so i got really chilly and went in. when i realized i really needed to shower and I'd put some funner clothes on and head out and see what i could find for the evening.
headed out and just began wandering, came across the old part of town and the great medieval buildings, and then kept wandering at this point everything is looking good food wise and i can't decide..as well as i have now walked way off the map i had so i turn around and take a diff. route back along the water, where i see the sun is starting to set. rowers are out getting in workouts, a group of people are celebrating a birthday by the water. people are just strolling about with open beer bottles, i finally stopped someone "do you speak English?" yes. "are you allowed to walk around with open beer bottles?" why yes! it is our culture! "great to know, danke!" ha ha love it. meanwhile i notice a guy checking me out, Indian dude... and not very discrete about it, but i go on my way, but notice he keeps popping up. I'm busy trying to capture pictures of the sunset and finally at one point far along the way, closer to my hostel, I'm leaning on a poll by a crosswalk and he comes up....mind if i talk to you for a while? sure i say...not really yes, not really no...hahha. anyway he wants to know if i am from Fiji...i look Fijian he says. he is from Sri Lanka and is here studying business management, yada, yada. so he asks how long i will be here, i say just for the night as i have to keep moving and he says ok, ok, then bye and walks away. hahah clearly difference in language...but that was fine. sorry but the z and y are switched on these dang German keyboards and its driving me nuts!!! and i am tired of trying to get it right so either spell check will catch it or you will figure out what i am trying to say! hahaha
so at this point i am back along the pier where there were lots of eateries with outdoor seating so i pick one and say, i would like to try a beer can you recommend one. she does and brings me a type of beck on tap. then i say i would like to try some food, something that is popular and ordered by locals. she says well we have a special on the board over there that is corned beef, potatoes, beets and some fish. or we have sausage that is how you say fried and is how you say, very heavy. i say i will try the first one. so she brings it out and sets it down and its like a mixture of mashed up boiled potatoes and corned beef in like a hash almost with a soft fried egg on top, pickled beets on the side and what basically looks like large rolled up herrings. as i grab my bag to get out my camera a local near by says...you are a brave girl, its good, just don't look at it while you eat it...and yes, do take a picture because no one will believe you. so i take a pic and start digging in and its actually pretty good, fish isnät to bad either. he says so what do zou think? i said its prettz good. he sazs that's what the fisherman used to eat as that was all they had and i gave them energy. waitress came back out and asked if i liked it and when i said yes she said REALLY? i said you were surprised i would? with a laugh. hahaha did not finish all the fish though...or the soft part of the egg, bit much for me, but i certainly got filled up!!! when i asked for the bill it only came to 9.90 euros! i said wow, this is great after being in Scandinavia i am used to seeing large numbers!!! she was like is it too little i can make it more? hahah, no thanks this is good!
so went back to the hostel and sat at the little bar and had another beer for all of 1.90 euro and replaced my las few days and realized i was glad to be in Germany and it was time to finish with Scandinavia...especially Denmark...still fond of Sweden and want to go back for more there!
so went back up to my room and had not had a roommate to that point and i noticed the door was unlocked...although they had really weird kezcard locks that i do not know how easy it would have been to get in anyway. and i had locked all my stuff up in the locker just in case. anyway, only thing in the room was two large backs of chocolate and a book on the bed. so i start getting ready for bed and in comes this chick that was down at the reception counter. i say hi, but i literal was crawling into bed when she came in, so i read my maps and such for a little bit while she was in the bathroom and when she came out i had started to settle in and she asked if it was ok to turn the overhead light out and i said yes. i thought i heard her putting on her sheets on her bed and then next thing i knew it was morning and she was no where to be found and the sheets were in a crumple on the floor...and that was at 6:30a....so my theory is that she is bolemic and went into the bathroom and ate all the chocolate, puked it up and then lazed down for a bit and then took off again....hahah, no i have no idea.
so now it is the 11th and i had breakfast which was included with my room price, filled myself up. watched a group of Italian kids fill their plates high and start making sandwiches to go and this woman who worked there came outta no where and said THAT IS NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE FOOD WITH YOU; YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT; THAT IS NOT ALLOWED....well they proceeded to look at each other when she walked away and then start stuffing their bags with food and devise plans on how to get out with most of the food but leave some behind and talk whatever definite trash it was they were saying behind her back, all why keeping a look out for the lady to see if she was watching. it was TOTALLY entertaining seeing all of this.
so then i got myself ready and checked out and started wandering a bit and there were tons of markets setup all over the place that i stopped at few, got some organic carrots, radishes, kohlrabi and some sweet treat that i don't know the name of as i just pointed and exchanged un ear-o, hahahah, but did have a nice conversation with the vegetable guy though, he asked me about the weather in Scandinavia where i had been etc, told me that yesterdays was the first non rain day they had had in weeks! and now it is drizzling and cloudy today. but still a nice little town to roam about and very walkable.
i came across another windmill and was getting my shots of that when i turned back to walk back on main road and i noticed an older woman by a bike and i thought to myself i love it...people of all ages biking, so i got my camera out and took a pic...trying to be discrete as i do not like to take people pics as much because it feels like invasion of privacy... its one thing if its a group of unknowings, but if its one person you are shooting, or shooting kids at a park..i do not want to upset parents or anything. anyway so just as i take the pic i look back over and she walks over to the next bike, turns her back to it and starts pulling down her nylons...i turn my head as i am thinking maybe she is just adjusting for the bike ride.....look back over and granny is barely in a squat, skirt lifted, nylons down just enough and is pissing right then and there.......hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha i laughed out loud for the next 4 blocks. hahahahahahahahahahahahaah
now i am at Internet cafe catching up and deciding where to go next...i think Amsterdam...but wondering if that is wise on a Friday night without any reservations! we will see!!! won't we!
