Yesterday I drove back from Devils Tower to Newcastle, Wyoming.  I then decided to head first west and then south to see some of the Wyoming grassland.  Out of Newcastle Miss GPS said:  'Continue 67 miles!'  At the end of the 67 miles, and now heading south towards Douglas, Wyoming, she issued a new instruction:  'Continue 72 miles!'  Within three hours I had driven two-thirds the length of my own country and only seen grass, herds of cattle, a beautiful blue sky, and a few cars and trucks.  The 'Texas trail' went through this region.  Also the 'Pony Express' in 1861-62 which was eclipsed by the telegraph in 1862.  By the way, in addition to cattle breeding, Wyoming is also a large coal producer; 40% of the nation's electricity is produced with Wyoming coal.
I'm currently in Douglas, the 72nd best of the 100 best small towns of America, and this morning saw the Pioneer Museum - a remarkable collection of Western items (incl. the original tipi from the movie 'Dancing with Wolves' - you will see the photo in my next column) and other stuff related to the region.  Douglas was home to a prisoner-of-war camp during WWII with 10,000 German and Italian soldiers.  Some of them expressed the opinion that they had never had it better!
The KOA WiFi did not work - at least not for me - so I've sought refuge at McDonald's, so far always a dependable provider.  When I'm finished here, I'll head to Fort Laramie and then to Cheyenne.  The 'Cheyenne Frontier Days' begin on July 19.  During a full week the old West comes alive again.  It will be interesting to see what real cowboys look like today and see them wrestle the steers.  I'll keep you posted!

Tanzy on

Have arrived home in Truckee, CA. It was an amazing trip and, as you say, you can go a long way through Wyoming and Montana and see lots of grassland and rolling hills. Gorgeous trip.
