On Friday I went up to Minot to see the Scandinavian Heritage Park.  Minot is a rapidly growing town due to the oil boom and has no quiet campgrounds right next to an idyllic lake (I could have told myself that), so I checked in at the Best Western Kelly Inn.  After two nights at the Riverside Camp in Washburn with only cold water, I enjoyed standing under the hot shower for ten minutes.  After checking out the next morning I went to the park, which was small but quite impressive considering that it's all volunteer-based.  Norway is most prominently represented with a magnificent wooden stave church, Sweden has a Dala horse, and a bronze statue of Hans Christian Andersen as well as a windmill symbolize Denmark.  The church is actually used for weddings, baptisms and other ceremonies.  It's a great place for an American-Norwegian family reunion, Andy.  In early October they will have their annual 'Norsk Høstfest', a four-day event which this year features Frank Sinatra, Jr., and Kris Kristofferson.  Check out www.hostfest.com (I believe it is).
From Minot I went to the Theodore Roosevelt State Park (North Unit), where I spent the rest of Saturday and Sunday exploring this magnificent piece of N.D. badlands.  WiFi or other electronic signals were nonexistent there.  This morning (Monday) I went to Medora, close to the South Unit and checked in at the Medora Campground which has WiFi.  I managed to download my e-mail while doing my laundry in the laundry room.  But it's noisy, cramped and not at all suited for quiet work on the pc.  Outside there's too much light, so you cannot see what's on the screen.  What to do?  I went to see the Medora Musical (fantastic show!) in the evening, and now I'm sitting at a table outside the tent fighting the mosquitoes, so that you will know that I'M STILL ALIVE!  And if you don't hear from me for one or several days it's because I'm in no-WiFi-territory, or because I can't see what's on the screen!
By the way, in the North Unit I met a vivacious California lady, Tanzy M. from Truckee, who offered a lot of good advice e.g., 'Remember always to bring plenty of gas, water, ice - and beer!'  I'm headed in the direction of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, where she just came from, so I will heed her advice on where to go and where to stay.
It's getting very late and very dark, so I will only manage to download a single photo.  Goodnight everybody!
Hopefully I will be able to bring some more observations and photos from the drive from Minot to the North Unit during the next few days.

Norsk Hostfest website was entertaining, you've gotta go back Oct. 1-3, Jen, for the Scandinavian festival and good entertainment of Bill Cosby, Franki Valle and 4 Seasons, Kris Kristofferson (the only true native son I suspect). Minot has lots of motels, no camping. What heritage foods did you eat asks this inquiring Swede?

Your blog is so informative. I didn't even know this place existed --- and I didn't know Marilyn was a Swede!
