4 hours from Chiclayo (bus followed by taxi) was the beach resort Huanchaco where the surfers seemed to rule. This was a great place to chill out and enjoy the seaside whilst being close to the ruins of Chan Chan and the Huacas of the Moon and Sun.

We thought about staying arounf here for a few days, walk the beach, see the historical sites and then head off to Huaraz for the glacier walking and mountain trekking.
