(from previous entry)

Our first stop was at Laguna Cuicocha. This laguna was formed when the volcano erupted and the tip collapsed to form a 200m deep, 3km wide crater. Water then filled in the crater (by constant rainfall) to form the laguna. There were a few little islands in the middle of the crater which were formed by subsequent eruptions.

We had a little boat tour around the laguna, took a few photos and headed off after having a complimentary glass of hot cider with aguardiente (local spirit). Definitely a warming experience!

Next we visited the village of Cotacachi, which was famous for its high quality of leather. After Cotacachi we visited the local village of Peguche for demonstrations of local weaving. Impressive and very time consuming... these guys were extremely skilled and it was amazing to watch. Nearby was the Peguche waterfall which was also very pleasant.

When we got back it was a case of relaxing and finally getting the fire started in our room and falling asleep to the crackling of the burning logs. It did take a little getting used to as every few minutes I was positive the sheets had caught fire with a rogue spark. Luckily we were still alive in the morning, and not burnt to a crisp.

We decided on a little trek and, upon meeting a new arrival to the hostal (Philippe), we visited the nearby the Lagunas de Mojanda (3 in all). It was known that one could (on a lucky day) see condors flying around the tops of the mountains around Mojanda, and we were indeed lucky enough to see them. It was a grueling hike around the three lagunas, but very rewarding. Itīs amazing how much difference being at 3,600m above sea-level makes, as going up the hilly parts were near impossible with all our hearts racing at top speed!

My legs are still aching from the 3 hour trek, but it was well worth it and was good training for the trip up Machu Picchu. I could do with a good Thai massage right now!
