Well the bikes didn't turn up today, so not a real good start. Hostess at the campsite told us the local bus into town was about a 10 minute walk away so off we went. Got to the busstop and waited . .and waited . . and waited - suffice to say that after about an hour of waiting we decided that no bus was in fact coming so we'd better walk. Pretty long walk (6k?) in to the nearest tram station, then a tram into Central Station. Hired some bikes from Mac Bikes - groovy 'nanna' type bikes (backpedal for brakes), and set off to explore the city. Had lunch in a park by one of the canals. Rode to the Van Gough museum and had a good look 'round inside. Then rode over to Anne Frank's house, for very interesting and moving tour. Chain on Michelle's bike broke just as we were heading for home, so rang the hire company who agreed to let us in and exchange the bike. Helpful guys in the bike hire place (passing the cigarette around meanwhile ;-)) suggested we have a look at a park where all the locals go for tea. Rode to the park, and had a great meal at a cafe - waitress spoke good English and translated the menu (it all looked Dutch to me) for us. It was starting to get pretty late by this time so had to head for home with our lights on. Called into the supermarket for supplies which were duly strapped to the bikes for the return journey. Free ferry ride across one of the main canals and onto (eventually!) the cycle path back to camp. Arrived home about midnight! after an eventful day . . .
