I love this place!!

The breakfast at our hotel is surprisingly good - completely out of character considering the rest of the place.

We pack up and head to the old city - narrow streets, nowhere to park, but gorgeous.  We all want to wander around there, so we gradually make our way to the edge of the old town and find a public parking lot that has several spaces open.  I try to interpret the ticket dispenser and finally conclude that there is no charge on Saturday morning.

It's a bit drizzley, but none of us seems to mind.  It is only about a hundred meters down to the road leading to the city center.  On that road we cross a bridge with beautiful views of the river and scenery below, then branch off to a pathway that leads around the outside of the old town atop the ramparts.  Cliffs rise up from the river, and they built city walls on the tops of those cliffs, so the view down from those walls is spectacular.  Did I say I love this place?

After a bit of wandering around, we look for a market, and sure enough, we find one.  We take our time wandering around, inspecting the cheese, meats, breads, fruit, vegetables, and other offerings there.  It is surprising how much simple pleasure there is in shopping at a market - seeing and sometimes smelling the fresh food, finding a way to communicate with the seller, paying, seeing the seller wrap and bag it.  I don't know....... somehow the large supermarkets don't affect me the same way.  Maybe it's because you actually study each product, you have someone to talk to at each stall, you savor the experience.  That's one I'll probably think on for a while.

After purchasing sausage, cherry tomatoes, cheeses, olives, breads, strawberries and plums (maybe more too.. that's what I remember) we reluctantly head back to the car.  That lunch tastes wonderful!  Rip bread off the loaf, stick some sausage and cheese on it, take a bite and toss a cherry tomato into the mouth.... and hmmmmmmmm..... so good!  Here's where I will describe the strawberries.  We found perfect strawberries everywhere we went on this trip.  When you buy a basket back home, they are usually imported, of mixed size, and a bit tasteless.  Here in EU, every single strawberry we have purchased is bursting with flavor - like your garden strawberry you grow yourself.  But they are also perfect visually - all the same perfect size, the same stage of ripeness -- perfect.  I am sorry to say, I don't think I have any pictures of those berries.

Once finished our lunch, we have a bit of trouble finding our way out of the city..... we stop and purchase a map, then discover we are on a road that leads to the freeway north.  But we don't find the freeway north.... the exchange doesn't exist.  We end up on a narrow, tree lined, two lane road that seems to be a local country road.  We abandon it and find a freeway.... and after driving around the ring road several times - we end up in France.  Somehow we come up with the right route (turns out that the narrow tree-lined road was the right one after all) and head north - our ultimate destination being Heerlen, but we want to stop in Vianden on the way to see the restored castle there.
