Komodo Island is a tiny island-just 22 miles long and 9 miles across. It is one of the 17,508 islands that make up the “Republic of Indonesia”. Approaching you see steep hillsides of golden grasses sliding down into turquoise bays of clear glass waters and white sand beaches. The innocent looking island is inhabited with 13 - 15 foot long, 200-300 pound Komodo Dragons.

The “Dragons” are the largest species of lizard in the world. Their unusual size has been attributed to island gigantism. Island gigantism is a biological phenomenon in which the size of animals isolated on an island increases dramatically in comparison to their mainland relatives due to the fact there are no natural predators. As a result of their size, these lizards dominate the island. Komodo dragons hunt and ambush prey. They can sprint up to 18 Km per hour. Some of our groups saw a dragon and a wild boar sharing a meal. Their group behaviour in hunting is exceptional in the reptile world. The diet of big Komodo dragons mainly consists of deer, wild boar and some birds. They also eat considerable amounts of carrion. It is a known fact that they will also share their meals with other animals.

We were taken on a guided walk through the forest, actually designated as a National Park -- no one is allowed to go by themselves. We were led by a park ranger & followed behind by a guide. Our park ranger pointed out various birds and species of plants as we went but the big thrill was coming onto a resting place for three of the dragons. They really are a site to behold. The pictures do not really represent how massive these creatures are. The sight made the 98 degree heat and I’m sure 98% humidity worth it. If you check out this youtube site you will see the video that I uploaded of one of the dragons we were watching. I am glad I was in a group of people watching from behind than in the one he was walking towards! Made me wonder if he was picking out his next snack!
