We docked early in the AM. Melbourne is the capital city for the State of Victoria, Australia. It is Australia’s second most populated city after Sydney. Melbourne dock is basically a few minutes from down town and since our tour was scheduled for afternoon we decided to take a walk into town. It is quite a beautiful city. We walked along the beach strip for a bit and then took a turn up the mail street. Strolled past a number of shops, did some window shopping & came to a Supermarket -- went in to have a look around & found some Bran Buds!! Such a find because I knew I was going to run out of what I had brought from home -- so I stocked up! Also ended up in a shoe store & came out with a few pairs of sandals! A good morning! In the afternoon we got in our coach, had a brief tour of the city & then headed out for a train ride through the countryside on “Puffing Billy”. It is a Thomas type steam train that takes you in open air cars through parts of the country. These run on narrow gage rail lines which were less expensive back in the 1900‘s and used to open up the remote areas. It travels through the forests, fern gullies and farmlands of the Dandenong Ranges found in this area of Victoria. It was quite fun! People actually sit on the window ledges with their arms & legs hanging outside. You will note that I sat like that for the picture but I can assure you I was not prepared to spend the entire train trip sitting on a four inch ledge (some people actually did!!). The views were pretty spectacular & it was a relaxing way to spend an afternoon. At one point we saw a couple of cockatiels in a tree --- they are a wild bird here in Australia and are often poached to be sold overseas as pets.
