We have been having such a great time we haven't found time to keep the blog upto date.
So this is the Update for the 6th of July
Kate was to cook a full roast dinner for Brittney, Jim & Tim. But thats another story!!
The day of my big flight, to be honest I was more excited than nervous,
I have never flown before and never studied the big book kate gave me on my birthday
so was pretty much going to fly clueless, this tends to work for me !
so we set off from Casa Del Herder!! and headed for Gainesville Regional Airport,
REGIONAL AIRPORT!!! Omg I was expecting to take off from some guys back yard!!
The airport was quite large and took us some time to find 'Skychiefs Aviation' we waited
a while for my Instructor Ryan, Who rolled up in a little golf cart introduced himself and took
us into the office and we checked the weather as there was a massive storm cloud on the way.
But don't worry about that, It might miss us ! Got a little more nervous now!
So me and Ryan got in the golf cart and went to the see the plane it was a Cesna 172
The plane would seat four but both Kate & Brittney declined (wonder why??) and sat at the
end of the runway to take some pictures.
After the preflight checks, we started the engines
headphones/earmuffs. Roger Roger, Whats you vector victor, we have clearence Clarence!!
couldn't help myself, our call sign was N3544Zulu. so we left the hanger and Ryan showed we how to steer the plane with you feet using the rudder and no sooner had we hit the taxi way I was steering the plane by myself, and weaved in and around the yellow line after a few hundred yards
I stated to get the hang of it, we the pulled over for the the final checks before take off, Ryan hit the throttle to full with the brake on and the plane pulled forward so hard I thought the wings were
gonna jump off. So were were then ready, well its now or never.
As we pulled on to the runway we were off....................................
The take off was really quite smooth, wobbled a little @ 500 ft Wow the views were fantastic,
between staring blankly at the dials I had just had explained to me!!
as we approached 1000ft Ryan said that i would be taking over ...... Errr what!!
so I slowly but tightly got hold of the yoke, Pulled it towards me, the nose lifted a few miliseconds later.
OMG im Flying the plane, I was Flying the plane after being airbourne for a couple of minutes.
It was Amazing, once I made it to 2000 ft I leveled off and did left turns, this was great fun!!
Once I was comfortable with the turns, Ryan had me follow headings on the compass and we headed towards the Florida Gators Football team stadium affectionaly known as 'the Swamp'
Its a pretty amazing site from above, so I gave control back to Ryan and rattled off loads of
pictures, Ryan was doing a few banked turns to give me better shots, thought I might fall out at one point!! once i had enough pictures I once again took control !!! after hearing the control tower
talking about the approaching storm, we headed back to avoid it and I was controling the plane.
so Ryan had me line up with the runway whilst desending, which was fine just kept correcting my heading but the runway kept approaching,
and all I kept thinking 'Oh Sh** he's gonna make me land this thing' luckily for the both of us as
we approached the final few hundred yards Ryan Thankfully took over!!
The landing was pretty smooth (as smooth as can be in a tiny plane) probrbly better than the
American Airways 737 flight that brought us to America. so as we were motoring along the runway
I was in charge of steering, with the addition of adrenaline and the speed we were doing we weaved
quite a lot!! the we turned a sharp left to the hangar, and came to a stop. shook Ryans hand and thanked him, pushed the plane back into the hangar and got in the golf cart to head back, on the
way back we stopped to take a look at Ryans other plane a Cesna 152, it was Tiny!!.
Had a look round and then we headed off, not before we stopped to watch a Police Helicopter Land
on the back of a trailer, such precision!. headed back to the office and met up with Kate & Brittney
With a smile spread from ear to ear.
I had a Wonderful time on my first flight, and would love to try it again.
Thank you for flying with Air Lowry,
Love Rikki (& Kate) x x x
