Where I stayed
My friend, Brian's House
I've successfully completed the first leg of my journey. I've made it to my friend Brian's house in NC. He was kind enough to invite me to crash at his house. It's a good excuse to hang out for a bit anyway.
Looking back on the first day a few things are apparent
1. This is going to be a grueling ride over the next several weeks
2. I'm not as young as I used to be.
3. My new bike seat isn't as comfortable as I had hoped.
4. Rain sucks on a motorcycle
5. The last 20 miles of a 13 hour day are the longest
All in all it was a very nice ride. I stopped every 100 miles or so to fuel up. I probably could have gotten here sooner but I got rained on in GA and had to stop to put on my rain gear. Rain isn't so bad but lightning is no fun. I try to avoid that when I can. I also loitered in a few places talking to some folks. Telling me about what I am doing a why. There is a certain mystique surrounding motorcycles and doing a ride like this. Even if someone isn't a fan of motorcycles they still take some level of interest. I usually get a question like.... "Are you nuts?" or "Wow, I don't know how you can ride so much.". If someone is a biker or likes to ride then it's "You are so lucky. I wish I could go." . MY answer to that is.... come on along. I have an open invitation for anyone who wants to ride to join in. That is part of my vision for this. Those that can't, I hope will follow along in spirit as I go on my merry way.
As, I've told most of you already, what I'm doing is a once in a lifetime opportunity for some. I hope to make it an ongoing project. I'm already pulling ideas together for next year's ride. Those of you that know me know I WILL put a lot of effort into it. I don't want to do it alone. I want folks to join in. Even if you don't ride, there are lots of ways to help. I've even gotten some donations already. To those that have donated. Thank you very much for supporting me and my efforts. For those that haven't or are thinking about it, just a small contribution adds up if enough folks toss something in.
I will be taking it easy today and continuing on Monday through Deal's Gap. It is also know as "riding the Dragon". There are 318 curves in an 11 mile stretch of road. From there I continue on to Louisville, KY then on to Michigan and finally to Canada, by the end of the week. After that i will be joined by a long time friend and we will go to Sturgis, SD to the big biker event that happens there every year.
When I get ready to move on, I will let everyone know.
