Where I stayed
Welcome to Home Base for Ride with Joe - 2008. Not sure how you ended up here but I'm glad you did. You may be asking yourself "What's the point?". Well let me help you out with that. I started this adventure with the idea of doing something useful and unique. I wanted an opportunity to do something that would allow me to do something I've always wanted to do and help others at the same time.
Let me give you some background about me and then explain what I'm doing. I'm a successful entrepreneur and in my spare time (what little I have had) I'm a Biker. I love to ride my motorcycle. It's my therapy of sorts. Life has a tendency to throw us all curves and I prefer to ride the curves on two wheels. That is much easier if you only have two to start with. Six years ago I was laid off of work after the .com cave-in that affected many in the technology arena where I had been working (did I mention I'm a geek as well?) I had the opportunity to start a business, which I did and was able to build it over the past several years amidst many of the aforementioned curves that life pitches at us all. Mine where several moves, some of which were out of state. I also dealt with a separation and subsequent divorce. I have two terrific boys that are certainly one of the best things in my life. Constant money issues and dodging the occasional bill collector and lawn maintenance solicitor that seems to always want to cut my grass or fertilize it for me (my other therapeutic endeavor). I tell all of this to reinforce the fact that I'm a regular guy and that I suffer the same challenges that most everyone faces at some level or other. I was lucky enough to be able to sell my business and while I'm not independently wealthy now, it did give me an opportunity to be able to take a month or two to take a break before I figure out what my next venture will be.
Now this leads me to the reason for this site. While pondering what I should do with the rest of my life, it occurred to me that I should take a break and do something I've never done before but always wanted to do. I always wanted to ride across country and see as many states as I could on my motorcycle. I spend so much time planning things that my original intent was to just ride and figure it out along the way. Then I thought "Hey why don't I start a website and get peoples opinions of where to go and what to see?". This then went through several iterations and ended up with the site that you now find yourself curiously riveted to. Hopefully you will see the goal and join in and help in some form or fashion. "OK, Joe, what is the goal?". I'm glad you asked. Here it is:
Starting somewhere at the end of July (time it be finalized soon) and visit as many places and as many states as I can in roughly a months time. This site will be the information portal for the journey. As well as a place to participate. I am going to gather donations and donate all the profits to http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/ You can visit their site and read more about them. You can donate via this site via the "Support My Travels" link. I'm hoping folks will send me messages letting me know good places to visit, places to stop and eat and places where I can camp out or rest for the night. I will keep everyone up to date with blogs and pictures describing where I am and what I've seen. If you want to ride along, we can coordinate meeting places along the way where you can hook up with me and by the end it'll be just like Forest Gump when he ran across the country :-) . Just call me "Joe Gump".
OK so now I need your help. The more supporters the better. If this works well this year my hope is to do it every year and gain more sponsorship. It's for a good cause. Be sure to subscribe to the updates.
Join in and Ride with Joe.
