G'Day to Everyone!

Today, the Perth World Youth Day Office hosted a number of stations of the Cross Pilgrimage Walk around the Swan River Foreshore with the World Youth Day Cross and Icon!  The Ukrainian community hosted the last two stations during the pilgrimage on either side of the causeway underpass.

As a response to Pope John Paul II's entrustment of the Cross and Icon to all the youth of the world, an invitation was made to everyone in the Ukrainian community to attend this Journey of the World Youth Day Cross and Icon event.

World Youth Day (WYD) is an exciting time for the Catholic Church, as the event reaches out to young Catholics and celebrates the universality of the Church Pilgrimage Approaches !
Pilgrimage Approaches !
.  It gathers hundreds of thousands and even millions of young Catholics around the world.  WYD will be hosted in Sydney from July 15-20, 2008.

The Journey of the WYD Cross and Icon is an enormously important part of Australia's pastoral preparation for the event.  In 1984, Pope John Paul II entrusted to the world's youth a huge wooden cross, asking that it be 'carried throughout the world as a sign of Christ's love for humanity.'  It's now known as the WYD Cross!

A large contingent of youth and adults from our church was present to receive the WYD Cross and Icon south of the causeway.  Many of the young Catholics who followed the Cross and Icon from previous stations continued to walk.  As the WYD Cross and Icon came to the station at Burswood Park, Ukrainian youth presented the crowd of followers with a re-enactment of Christ's death and resurrection.  Following this, the Cross and Icon was carried to Victoria Park where the Pilgrimage walk came to an end!

A number of youth from St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Maylands will be making the trip to Sydney for World Youth Day on what has become known as "The Malanka Bus"!  We wish them a safe journey!
