G'Day Everyone! Scarborough Beach provided thousands of beach-goers some excitement this Sunday afternoon. The beach was full of sunbathers with few in the ocean, the likelihood of strong winds and high waves. The conditions more favoured kitesurfers and windsurfers. Within thirty minutes of settling in for an afternoon of relaxation, a police helicopter arrived in front of the Surf Life Savers beach site. Within seconds, the shark siren sounded, signalling everyone to vacate the water and prompting everyone on the beach to watch the action as it unfolded. Speculation soon spread that a shark was in the area! Then, word was a suspected drowning! Either reason wasn't uncommon as these were the realities of beach life here in Australia!
As the police helicopter, police boat and surf life savers searched the waters in front of Scarborough Beach, a second and third helicopter soon arrived. Finally, a fourth helicopter arrived which appeard to be a local tv news helicopter!
The search continued for a couple hours with no apparent success! Later, on the television news, we learned the swimmer who prompted the search, had walked home, leaving his gear on the beach! Locals suspect he went to the pub which isn't uncommon and another reality of beach life in Australia!
Cheers, Rick & Elsie!
