Peace & Love Hostel, Paris
Ricki: Don't be thrown by the name - this is not a hostel for hippies as we had previously thought. It's down market, granted, but it's cheaper, more central to the things we want to see, and much more personal a place than the YHA. When we first arrived in Paris, fresh off the EuroStar, and were standing mouths agape on the street wondering where we were so we could get to where we wanted to go, a young Canadian guy came up to us and gave us a pamphlet for this place. Unfortunately we had already booked the YHA (or so we believed!) so we had to turn him down, but after a couple of nights in that place we thought that a change would be as good as a... And here we are. It's been a particularly uninteresting day, all up. It's raining, again, and I don't think we've seen a totally rain-free day since the first few in Ireland. It's getting to be a little ridiculous. We arrived here mid-morning, got our room, which is just us and does have its own shower, but is a total of 87 steps up from the front door of the place or a possibly portentious 99 if you come up from the basement kitchen, and consequently collapsed. We snoozed for about an hour (Alex on the lower bunk and me on a chair) and woke only when a young man entered, wanting to clean. We took our washing around the corner to the laundromat and did 2 loads for 40 francs plus 6 francs for 20 minutes in the dryer. That's somewhere around $10 for the lot, but that's okay. We won't do it too often. The rest of the afternoon has been spent eating lunch/dinner (a combined meal, today) and writing the diary and some postcards. A rest day, today, and well-deserved, if I may say so. Alex has gone for a shower and I am sitting downstairs, steeling myself for the Ascent. I think I'll write a few letters, first.
