A historic journey today- First Hadrian's Wall- which is probably the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. It is the best known frontier in the entire Roman empire and its remains stands today as a reminder of of the past glories of one of the world's greatest powers. Hadrian's wall was built on the orders of the emporer Hadrian, who visited Britain in AD 122.It's sole purpose was to separate the Romans and the Barbarians. The wall is about 120 km ( 73 miles ) long and was 4 meters high.It took the army over a decade to build the Wall. Hadrians Wall was abandoned from the year 142 for about 20 years, but from 160 to 250 AD it remained the north west frontier of the Roman Empire. It is a truly amazing feeling to visit this area and gives you a very good feeling to see how it was all constructed and the massive amount of work it took to complete this project. Many Forts were constructed along the Wall. We visited the "Housestead Fort" which is the most complete example of a Roman Fort. It lies uphill from the car park and is a fairly strenuous 10 minute steep uphill walk which we tackled with no trouble at all. OK so I sat down when we got to the top but that was just to do up my shoe laces. Just the same it was well worth the effort .
As it is the holiday season here , a live re-enactment of the Roman Army was displayed to us. Instead of soldiers they asked some school age kids to participate. great fun for them and great fun for us watching them.
Gosh we drove on some narrow roads today to these places. It was all farming country, sheep and cows. Lots of wet edges along the road and it was not always mud either. Poor Charlie did not look her usual smart self when we got home but Rick did not let her suffer for very long and she looked like herself again in no time at all.
We had a very enjoyable day today, learned lots and appreciated the way these sites have been discovered and so very well preserved. A most rewarding day for us and guess what ,it has not rained at all and the sun was out most of the day. So far Scotland has been kind to us. Mind you most of what we saw today was on the English border region. All nice country just the same.
