Hot day again today but our mission today is to spend the day discovering the city. A short bus trip into the city and a short walk to the old part of the city.
Cordoba, picture a city with half a million people. Embellished with fine architecture and fuelled by a prosperous and diverse economy. Picture universities and libraries filled with artists and philosophers. Picture an Islamic caliphate more advanced and civilised than anything else the world had ever known, than you picture Cordoba in the year 975 AD. A lot of ancient Cordoba remains in place. The main attraction is the mosque, it is enormous and one of the only places in the world where you can celebrate Mass in a Mosque. Once again the influence of 8 centuries of Islamic rule. In 1994 the southern part of the Historical Centre of Cordoba was declared a World Heritage Site. This area covers many monuments, from the Mosque through the historicals districts, museums, squares, ancestral houses and religious foundations.
We decided to take an hour tour in a horse and buggy. Great way to see the old city and gives you an idea of where things are situated. Thoroughly enjoyable and also a little different. Once that was done we started our walking. Too many things to look at, lots of little narrow streets, but some of the architecture is awesome and very pleasing to the eye. Although we had a map we did a lot of meandering through the streets and came across all sorts of monuments.
It wasn't easy for Graham and Carol because they are not used to the heat at all,
The fact that there were so many interesting things to look at made you grin and bare the heat a lot better. We did chase the shady sides of the streets though.
In Cordoba you find lots of front doors and when they are open and you take a look inside you find that these doors lead to the most beautiful and cool courtyards. We saw so many of them and some of them are simply stunning. Had a few fuel stops along the way, thirsty work sightseeing. At about 3pm we had enough and it was time for a late lunch. found a nice cool spot in a lovely area and finished the day with a nice meal.
We had a very special day today and are now totally buggered but very satisfied with ourselves. At the moment we are sitting in McDonalds using their WiFi because there is none at the park. We so do belong in here with all the younger set, and blend in very well. ( Just wish they would be a little quieter, that's all )
Tomorrow we will be going to Ronda about 190km from here. See you there

Yesterday's blog was posted before this one. Sorry about that
