I am not going to whinge about the weather so please do not think that we are not happy, but we are trying very hard to cope with the rather low temperatures, strong wind and rain. As from to day we have started to laugh about it all as well. Even our hosts are feeling it.
Anyway off in the car again today, first shopping in the markets in Hoorn. Must admit they are fantastic markets and go on forever. good to walk through them and look at all the different things. There was one stall that caught my eye and I knew that I had to buy something there. Yes kids a whole stall full with salted licourice, heaven had come to me. Elly and I sorted a big bag each which we started to eat straight away. All so good.
Next destination was an old preserved windmill. Some history regarding this mill and the area. At the end of the 16th century a start was made in North Holland with draining the many lakes that were forever posing a threat to the surrounding land. Firstly a dyke was build called a ring dyke.A series of mills were constructed on this dyke and the pumping of the water of the lake had began. As the water level lowered a second row of mills was constructed and lowered the water even more. A third and fourth series of mills was constructed as well. In all 52 mills were constructed to empty on lake. Today power pumps are used to keep the land dry of course, but it costs the government a lot of money each year to keep it dry. Most of the windmills fell into disrepair , a few of them have been restored to its original state. They are fantastic to walk in. Everything is so big and looks very strong.
Next stop Volendam, nothing special to do there except have a glass of wine and enjoy the scenery
Home again late afternoon, just in time for Wim to cook us another gormet dinner, which we enjoyed sitting by the open fire.
What a nice day we had.
