Easy start to the day of course with a leisurely breakfast followed by coffee and cake for morning tea. At this rate we will be as big as houses when we go home again, still we have decided to enjoy it instead. The Dutch make such lovely cakes and it is very hard to say no.
Next stop, a city called Enkhuizen, not very far from here, only 15 minutes by car. I used to go to the High School in Enkhuizen. Our main aim was to catch the ferry to the Zuiserzee Museum, a good way to see the harbour and the marinas there. The Zuiderzee did not exist for very long. Originally it was a small lake with several creeks. The lake became larger and larger. At the end of the thirteenth century, storm tides caused enormous breaches in the surrounding land and the Zuiderzee was born. By the 19th century, people were eager to replace this dangerous stretch of water so in 1918 they decided that the Zuiderzee had to go.
First they build a long dyke between Noord Holland and Friesland which was completed in 1932. The large scale reclamation followed and the sea became a lake. They have since build a historical village which incorporates the total history of the area's which were affected by all this. I must say it is very well done , locals still live in some of the houses and it is still very much a working village. They have 2 sections to it all, one they call the outdoor museum ,which we saw and another called the indoor museum. We missed out on the latter because we ran out of time. There is so much to see there that you realy need a couple of days to see it all. Elly's grandparents old house still stands in the village , which became a must see for us all.
The whole day was very interesting.
