Where I stayed
Sok San Bungalows
We got the boat out to Koh Rong, it took 2 hours to get there but that was after the captain managed to get the engine started. While we were waiting for the captain to start the boat I took the opportunity to buy breakfast from a local woman in the water village. I got 2 doughnut looking things for $1 and they tasted pretty good. I was a little apprehensive halfway through the trip when the sea got a little rougher and I noticed the boat was in fact 2 boats stuck together, one on top of the other and then the water cooling the engine started coming out black. However it was fine and the captain just turned off the water cooling the engine
As the boat approached the island we saw a really long white beach. It stretched for about 6km with some bungalows at one end and a little town at the other with the Sok San bungalows that we were going to stay in. It was lovely, unspoiled, crystal clear water with a hint of turquoise and a few bungalows with straw roofs built on stilts. It looked like you would imagine it to look like or a postcard would look. That night we settled down in our beds, just a bucket for a shower and a simple bed with a mosquito net.
The next day we got a little boat out to snorkel round the other side of the island with the Swiss couple. There were a few fishing boats there and I spotted a couple of blue swimmer crabs along the way. It was mostly brown plants down there but every so often there were corals that looked like sponges and clams that were luminous purples and greens. When we got close to them they closed and went brown and blended in with the surrounding rock. The fish weren't too bad either
The food on the island was very good also. They had their own restaurant at Sok San which was basic but with very good food. They didn't have any tables or chairs just the house where the Cambodian family that runs the place live and a little menu outside. They cooked on a BBQ but had a fridge which consisted on a cool box and ice that was delivered daily (electricity only ran from 6-10 at night.) I ate beef Lok Lac, a Cambodian dish and the beef was really tough, couldn't really break it down in my mouth only flatten it before swallowing the chunks whole. It was very nice none the less. I ate some squid that was very fresh, the little black spots on the back were still moving around and flashing on and off. When i put my finger on the tentacles they sicked to me and they had quite some suction on them. It was very simply BBQed and tasty. They had a Marlin delivered when we were leaving and I would have loved to have tasted that.
There are a lot of animals here and they all lead good lives. The dos all have puppies and there really cute. I spent about half my time playing with them They were so cute I missed out on spending time with the chicken and I really like chicken so that gives you and indication of how cute they were!
The island was not without lots of sand flies, Sofia has a bad delayed reaction to it. it looks like she has chicken pox. I got a strange looking thing on my back. Look at the photo as I can't describe it. A bit yellow and bulging out a bit. I also got some sand fly bites, scraped the skin off my foot on some barnicles as I swan under a peir. The fake skin I brought worked a treat on it. I stepped on a root backing away from a large wasp and cut my foot. The water had little stingy things, we couldn't see them but they were like little jellyfish stings but they were tolerable and when I look back on the island I will not be thinking about this.
This island as well as others here have big investors buying up land. Even an airport is being built on this island but building work has been halted due to the financial crisis. I feel privileged to have experienced this before it become a major tourist destination. I think the locals are welcoming it as it will bring in some more money for them.
I felt on this island I have been experiencing something very special and unique and I arrived at a perfect time, beautiful weather and a really nice community atmosphere. The perfect beach cure, I was well rested and ready to tackle Vietman and Ho Chi Minh City.
