I am writing this retrospectively as I didn't get round to using an internet cafe while in Kannur. We arrived by train at about 7 in the evening and headed out from the train station to find a hotel. I don't like arriving at a new place when it is dark as it is difficult to get your bearings and work out where the good areas are (if any!). Sometimes though it is unavoidable and we made our mistake by picking a hotel close to the station - as with most places the best areas are not often by train stations. As with before, although we had to share our room with some uninvited cockroaches, we still caught up with days Premier football matches. Found out on that day that Worcester beat Wasps on Fri night - go on you Warriors!

As Cath was still poorly and we had enough of the 'roaches, myself and Dan got up early and headed off towards the sea to find some more accommodation (don't stay at The Plaza if you ever visit Kannur!). After an hour of looking we came up trumps with The Mascot Beach Hotel (definitely stay here!). It had magnificent views of the Arabian Sea and although a bit more than we would normally pay we stayed in a Suite that helped Cath get better and us erase the horrible hotel from the night before.

Visited a snake farm a few km's from Kannur on Monday. This was dissapointing though as all the animals/reptiles were kept in pretty poor conditions. We got some late lunch in Kannur and walked up to the train station to book our onward travel to Canacona and into South Goa. As we got near to the station we were brought to a halt by two separate groups of demonstrations. We since found out that it was to do with an alleged 'sex scandal' involving a Muslim cleric. Along with everyone else we politely watched them pass and headed into the station.

The next morning we read on the front page of the Indian Express newspaper how the demo in Kannur had turned violent and the police had to use their 3 foot batons and tear gas. Hey ho, so it would seem we missed the riot while we were messing around in the station. A lucky break!

So that was Kannur. The next day we jumped onto a 3hour train to Mangalore.
