It should be a nice place but it isn't.

Asked in my Homestay about buses to Ende and they told me that there is only one bus a day and it leaves at 6am. She arranged for it to pick me up at 5:30am but when it turned up it was just a small bemo (minivan). Luckily there weren't many of us on board but instead of it going to Ende as i had been told it would it stopped in Mbay an hour and a half along the coast and i then had to transfer onto an Ende bound 'proper’ bus from there. There was one other westerner on board, Elena a Spanish girl, who informed me that this bus had also originated earlier that morning from Riung so why my Homestay didn’t book me on it instead of the bemo i don’t know. Anyway, finally got to Ende at 9:45am and we both headed to the Hotel Ikhlas. Like Riung they also have cheap rooms with shared bathrooms for 50,000INR but we decided to share and upgraded to a twin room with fan & attached bathroom for 120,000INR (splashing out or what!) Spent the afternoon exploring the town and i think i can safely say it’s a shithole. Almost all of the sad decrepit shops were shut for some reason; there was no ATM to withdraw cash from (i ended up walking to the one at the domestic airport); there were no barbers where i could get a shave and the three hair salons i found didn’t do shaves; the market area was just grim; and the ‘beach’ was a litter strewn eyesore! The only positive i can give is that there’s a supermarket up just past the airport where i stocked up on toiletries and coffee sachets. In the evening me and Elana wandered to the night market which was surprisingly active and ate street food for dinner.
