Staying in comfort overlooking the harbour in Auckland. Nice views of the city above and the ferry terminal! :-( across the dock.
Took a rainy ferry to Waiheke Island, out in the bay from Auckland, we had a 90 minute tour of the island by some crazy bus driver, telling us the price of property (invariably > $1million) and the populations of the various schools on the island, before we struck off the beaten track amid a torrential downpour to walk around a few wineries and so forth.
First stop was Mudbrick but not before the sun had come out and dried us off (remember the Auckland weather?), a wonderful spot of lunch,
a tasting of super wine, then on to Jurassic Ridge, all good so far. Then a wrong turn sent us down to the coastal path too soon, the weather closed in and we found that instead of another convivial sip or two of wine at Cable Bay winery we were infact going to be route marching for 3.5 hours through the driving raing and thick mud in order to make it to our return ferry! :-(
All worked out in the end, but for Ellie's dramatic slip in the mud, sending her feet out horizontally before her, a moment before she and gravtiy realised the situation (like wylie coyota) and then she fell flat into the mud. She handled it with a lot more grace than I would have been able to.
Finally we returned to the big smoke to enjoy some fish and chips at The Waterfront, in front of the enormous America's Cup yacht K1 (116ft super yacht that the Americans refused to allow to win the cup)
