On the road at 7:11am on our way to Yorkton.  What a great province Manitoba is.  We stopped in at the tourist information booth on the Manitoba side of the border and were warmly greeted by a kind woman who was more than helpful in explaining the routes to get to Yorkton.
There are scenic routes and there are routes that will get you there faster.  We opted for the scenic route.  We have now left the Canadian Shield with its massive rock outcrops and I just have to ask - how do those trees grow out of those rocks.  Amazing.  We are now travelling the prairies.
Great bald eagles, falcons, deer, ground hogs, turkey vultures, deer and bison were viewed from the car.
We stopped for lunch at Portage La Prairie and sat near the floodway   The rivers run north from just after Thunder Bay, and they continue to run north this far west.  They go to the Arctic Ocean.  I can see how any pollutants can end up in Polar Bears.  Pesticides used for the vast fields of crops leach into the soil and make their way down river and move into the Arctic. They travel by the water and by the food chain.  The flood-ways are built to help the water find its way without creating damage to the population centres and crops.
Harvest season is underway and you can see the equipment in the fields getting the most of each day.  Wheat, canola, and sunflowers were most noticeable.  I have never seen sunflowers for as far as the eye can see before.  What a sight.  "Children of the Sunflower".
It is unseasonably cool here so I believe we may use the services of a hotel or motel or hut at a part rather than camp.  All I can say is - "It's a hard life".
Had a great visit with an old friend I have not seen in over 23 years.  Very nice evening.
Pictures will follow.
