Where I stayed
Having arrived in Perth and picked up the worst car I have ever driven or even been in, a Hyundai Accent (more on the Accent in later entries) we headed to Fremantle, a town right next to Perth to find our accommodation for the night and to meet up with Catriona, a friend of my aunt Katie.
It didn't take us too long to find the Norfolk Hotel where we would be staying in Fremantle, although having seen our room we were both of the view that if we'd failed to find the hotel that may have been a blessing in disguise. Although clean and functional (to say the least), the room was one of the noisiest and least secure places we'd stayed in. Fortunately, we were only going to be there for one night and we'd be spending that out with Catriona so it wasn't the end of the world
After a shower and change of clothes we headed downstairs to the bar to meet Catriona. Catriona was at Univeristy with my aunt (who, I should explain, is only 8 and a bit years older than me being the youngest sibling where my Mum is the eldest) but subsequently emigrated to Australia, as did her parents and brother. Having met up, at Catriona's suggestion we headed over to the Little Creatures Brewery where there was a restaurant as well as a bar. The Brewery turned out to be great place as rather than eating in a separate building both the bar and restaurant are inside the same building as all of the brewing machinery so you really feel like you are part of the action (you can actually watch the workers tending the machines through glass partitions).
Naturally we tried the house beers, which were excellent, and also had some very good food. If you are in Perth I would definitely recommend a trip out to the Brewery as it is well worth the effort. Catriona had travelled around much of the West Coast of Austraila and had lots of useful hints and tips on where we might like to go during our travels in the West. She'd also recently been to Peru (where we will be heading in the Autumn) which meant we spent most of the evening chatting about our respective travels. Inevitably, the evening ended quicker than we were expecting (always the way when you're having a good time) and we said our goodbyes. However, Catriona had been very kind and offered us a place to stay when we returned to Perth in a week's time after our trip down South so we would be meeting up with her again soon. It had been a lovely evening and certainly tempered our dismay at having to return to the less than glamorous surroundings of our room.
