Semporna was a bit of a dump really but the main reason to be there was for the diving. A few miles offshore is the famous island of Sipidan, known to divers as one of the top ten dive sites in the world. Having only just completed our open water course Vic and I were somewhat spoiling ourselves by going to Sipidan, but since we were already in the area we thought what the hec!
Unfortunately (or fortunately for those who want to see them) sharks are almost always seen when diving around Sipidan so Vic decided to give it a miss and go snorkelling instead. So I joined a group of divers from Scuba Junkie - a dive operator that had been recommended to us. I had 3 dives in one day, all of which were fantastic! As soon as the boat came to a stop at our first dive site we could see literally dozens of green and hawksbill turtles swimming all around us. I wish I had taken a disposable underwater camera cos I could have got some great snaps on the dive. We saw loads of sharks too (white tip and black tip reef sharks) - at least 5 on the first dive, plus all manner of weird and wonderful fish. If anyone is ever in Borneo and likes to dive I would highly recommend it.
The following day Vic and I joined another dive group to go snorkelling around Sipidan island. This was also fantastic and we saw loads. Vic took a little persuading to get in the water - I had to get in the water first and check there were no sharks in the vacinity before Vic climbed down from the boat. As soon as Vic was in the water she was off like grease lightning with me tugging at her feet to point out all the turtles and various colourful fish she was overtaking! We were back on Sipidan beach in no time but at least Vic had now seen turtles in the wild!
The next day we jumped on a flight fro Tawau to Kaula Lumpur before then heading to Bangkok...
