Caught the subway uptown to The Bronx Zoo to meet Leights friend Caroline who came to NZ in 2005 as an exchange student. Leight was reallllly excited to see her, it was donation day at the zoo, most people just walk in but we paid 5 dollars each to help the animals.
It's not like Auckland Zoo its alot more open and much much bigger and heaps of animals, some we had never seen before, grizzly bears and mountain cats of some sort and heaps more. Because it was cold alot of the animals were in inside enclosures which arent very big but when its summer they have lots of space outside. Was sad to see the giraffes inside a bedroom sized room with a high ceiling, one was so obessed it had rolls of fat, was quite weird too see.
Rich was really excited about the squirells, but Leight and Caroline explained that they were wild and were everywhere and didnt belong to the zoo. They had a cool sea lion enclosure, and the sealions were like humans, quite cheeky with the trainers etc. They had a baby one which just slept on a rock through all the comotion of the adult ones being fed.
We walked through the bird enclosure and they had a small room with all the extinct birds in the world, the majority of them came from NZ which was sad, but was obviously because of the introduction of rodents etc from other countrys.
The zoo closed at 4.30 and it was getting dark and we didnt really want to be in the bronx for too long. We said goodbye to Caroline, which was sad but was awesome to have seen her again and we'd had heaps of fun with her.
We got the subway back to Times Square, just in time to go to put our names in a ballot for front row seats to a show. We both put our names in for two tickets each to double our chances of winning, the last name pulled out was Rich's, was really cool considering they only pulled out 11 names and theres was at least 60 people there. So basically we had to pay 26.50 each for the best seats, front row, which are normally worth 121.50, and the only other seats that were in our price range was for 41.00 right at the back, so we were pretty stoked about that!
We went for another walk around and had some dinner, a guy came up to us trying to get us to buy his CD which happens quite often, so we pretended to be French, he thought we couldnt understand him so he was doing funny dances and mocking us, but the joke was on him really, well atleast he left us alone and we had a good laugh afterwards.
We lined up for the show, the theatre was cool, kinda smaller than other ones but a good size and atmosphere, but we were right at the stage so it wouldnt have mattered anyway! The show was 'In The Heights', was about living in the Bronx and mexicans/latino life in America, was full of hip hop, latin dancing and more, cool music, rapping and comedy. It's one of the newer musicals on Broadway but has won heaps of awards last year and sells out almost every night its on.
It was a really cool show, afterwards we noticed there were flash chauffered cars out the front, and we waited, one was for Soulja Boy, and the other was for Samantha Mumba. For some reason we decided to be groupies, and waited with other people at the side entrance to get the actors autographs on our programmes, they'll potentially be famous one day!!!!!!
