Well Hannah and I left New York just under a week ago and it is fair to say that Colombia is a little unlike Manhattan. We arrived into Bogata and spent a couple of nights there, pretty cool place, stayed in the quant old part of town, a lot of seasoned backpacker types around and seemed like a bit of a party town. From there we headed up to the country's marquee Colonial town white washed walls, plaza, church etc- Villa De Leyva, really nice little place, see photos. Couple of nights there and now we are in San Gil, the Queenstown of Colombia, burgeoning adventurer tourism joint. We have a day rafting planned for tomorrow and some waterfalls and pools to explore.
A few observations on Columbia so far…
Hannah and I are the only people in Columbia, if not South America that do not speak a scrap of Spanish, Ha
Like any developing country bus drivers are fearless, however buses themselves surprisingly luxurious, fully reclining seats, air con, movies (frustrating, refer to first observation, as all dubbed in Espaniol)
People are fantastic, the most helpful you could meet, considering we battle at most transactions they are patient beyond belief.
Mum’s- This place is safe- No sign of any car bombs OR FARC guerrillas as yet, in fact have not noticed anything remotely suss. The army have stopped a couple of buses and checked all the men’s ID and a have received a bit of a pat down. The New Zealand passport, gets a few funny looks.
Colombians drink a lot of beer
Off to Medellín tomorrow night, home of Pablo Escobar and the Medellin cartel, in the 80s he was the 7th richest man in the world and offered to pay off all of Colombia’s international debt!!!, we then heading further south and hope to be in Equador in a week or so, moving pretty quick through Colombia as hope to make it as far as Bolivia before we fly to Central America on the 5th July, Rocka once named "Vivians" in La Paz as the greatest pub in the world, this from a man who has drunk his fair share of beers in bars around the world, his word goes a long way. Rocka we will do our best to get there.
Hope everyone is well,
Rich and Han
