It's hardly a challenging start to our RTW trip, but two days in London to visit the Queen and eat some jellied eels is supposed to be our gentle introduction to globetrotting.

If the mountain won't/can't come to Mohammed, then we'll fly to Heathrow. Maeve and Jim (hereinafter referred to as 'The Whittles') are two good friends of ours now living in Oxford. They've recently returned from their own variant on the RTW route, and we figured we'd better visit them to hear first hand all their 'here be dragons' warnings. The Whittles (sorry...has to be done) spent the best part of a year in Ko Phi Phi, Thailand helping rebuild a town decimated by the Tsunami. They're great people with inspiring tales to tell, and Jim is such a seasoned traveller he's had a pair of shorts named after him (well, i certainly call my grey, combat-style shorts 'a pair of Jim Whittles').

We're also going to catch up with my friend Cian of Lochnane for a fancy schmancy lunch in some expensive eatery in the City (his treat - I pawned him off on a CafeBarDeli lunch last time he was in Dublin, knowing he'd have to return the favour in some fancy members club in London). Cian's survived London for the past 15 years without too many ill effects - apart from a gravity-defying twist to his fringe. Part quiff, part mohawk, it's a lesson to all of us that a few years in recruitment can do wonders for a mans tonsorial topping.

So a dry run it is. Get through Dublin Airport, survive in a foreign city (well, OK...London doesnt really count), and make like a backpacking tourist...I look forward to updating you on our travails.
