Things really improved in the evening though when I watched the football with a Norwegian and a Swede who were both staying in my dorm. They were nice lads, as was the Slovakian opera singer who I had the pleasure of sharing a room with the next night - so it was a mixed bag to start with!
I'd vowed not to drink any alcohol whilst in Norway after hearing the horror stories about the price of a beer, but I relented on my very first night and we all had a few bottles as they were only three quid each
The city itself was quite small, especially when you take into account that it's the capital. Like I said, it grew on me as I wandered around, no doubt aided by the fact that I had beautiful weather the whole time. Probably the most appealing aspect of Oslo was its architecture, particularly the impressive Royal Palace and the Ahershus Castle, and there were plenty of gardens to relax in.
To be honest though, it reminded me of Dublin, which isn't a bad thing but having only just spent a few days there, I was itching to get out and see the scenery that Norway is famous for...
