Stopped off at a cute little town called Gruene on the way to Austin (most of the towns round here were settled by Germans). Saw a chameleon! The waitress wasn't as excited as we were, but was very nice and didn't look at us weirdly.

Austin is a bit of an 'indie' town apparently, and it did have a nicer feel than the other cities we've been to. The bars are still bit on the dark, smelly, very loud thing. We found a nice place though, chatted with some locals and saw a good band (according to Fiona, not Rich).

Bit of a drive to the Guadalupe river where we rented and tube each - and one for the esky - and make our way down a river. The rapids must have sorted out the many children because it was a lot quieter by the time we got to the end.

Heading out of Austin we detoured via a 'town' called Luckenbach - basically a general store and a few other buildings. On our arrival - a man with a guitar was pretty excited to have an audience. He was very good and it was lovely to sit under a tree and listen to nice songs (including ghost rider). Finally felt like we were in Texas!
