Today was our last day in karijini and tomorrow we would be leaving for scotland to start our motorbike odyssey...
Grant and Rhys packed the roof rack and the car while Nicola and I Cooked us a delicious, but rather large breakfast!
We all piled into the Landy once again and headed to Wittenoon, an old asbestos mining town. Driving through the empty streets was airy, Wittenoon is very much a ghost town now with only a few people left (not sure what they do there!).
We were able to drive right up to the old tailings of the mine, there were large piles of asbestos out in the open for anyone to drive up or play on! you could even see asbestos flakes all over the road, it gave it a pretty blue colour. Along the road into the old mine site there are signs warning the public of asbestos contamination and to take care......pity the poor miners didn't get the same warning!
After the history lesson we drove onto the hamersely gorge for a swim! It was beautiful and we can see why it is Nicola's favourite gorge. Once again the water was COLD, but it was so nice that we had to suck it up and jump in. Dad, Rhys and I swam to a nice rock to sun ourselves and thaw out before braving the water again with a diving competition and swimming back. Rhys and I then went for an explore and found an awesome little spa pool - great spot and the water was warmer.
It was then time to drive the last little bit back to Karratha. When we got home we all helped to unpack, line up for a shower and headed off to FiNaCING, a show Rio Tinto puts on for Karratha. It has a great atmosphere and the kids love it. We checked out the campers and mum and dad dreamed about their retirement. Grabbed a bit to eat then made our way home, we were all a little buggered so it was an early night for most. I was unable to sleep so watched a bit of the London Olympics.
The next morning Nicola, Dad and I walked into town with Monty to get supplies for breakfast, while Mum did many loads of washing to get the red soil out of the cloths and shoes. Rhys cooked up a great breakfast. Nicola and I went into town for a little girls time and shopping while Rhys sorted out all the photo's for a slide show when we got back.
Mum cooked a great roast pork for lunch while Rhys and I packed ready for the next stage of our adventure.
It was a great week with Mum, Dad and Nicola! We all had a great time together and can't wait for Nepal!
Drove out to the airport and waited for our flight to Perth then Stornoway.
All the flights were ok, we have finally found a cure for Rhys' bad travelling moods - valium! It knocked him out for a good 7hours so he arrived in Dubai in a great mood! and noise cancelling ear phones are my new best friend! Once in Glasgow we had our longest stop over so found a pub and parked ourselves there to pass the time - Hello Great Britain Beer, it was nice to be back.
Finally it was time to board our very small plane to Stornoway! luckily it was a quick flight. We could see Megan, Neeve and Marley waiting for us. As we walked in Neeve ran up to say hello, very cute. It was awesome to see them all and be in Stornoway.
Had a great evening catching up, Donald took us down to see our bikes.....Rhys is very happy with his, I am very nervous about mine! it is huge!! Will have to see how tomorrow's first ride goes.
It has been a very long 48hrs so when we finally got to bed it was lovely.
