Hello,

On this whole trip there has never been a dull day, and I have done so many things I never thought I would but in Cairns I had an experience that probably tops the lot....although I'm fairly keen to forget it!

After a 12 h bus ride from Airlie beach we arrived at the Travellers Oasis, a nice little hostel in Cairns. The larger than life owner, Gabe told us about the hostel bbq where you got the chance to try Emu, Kangeroo and Crocodile for the bargain all you can eat price of 10 dollars. Well, you have to give the local food a bit of a go we thought and signed up!
The bbq was delicious, but after dinner Gabe had a digeridoo competition planned and pulled names from a hat. I thought to myself 'I don't have that much chance of getting picked as there are 40 people here', how wrong I was! Before I knew it I was up front trying to get a bit of a tune out the huge tube and not getting too far. After a short practice, Gabe asked the 4 of us that had been called up to give us our best tune and we all made various pitiful sounds.
If that wasn't bad enough.....Gabe had saved the best to last, we all had to eat part of the Witchetty grub he had cooked up on the bbq (thank heavens it wasn't alive!). For those who don't know what that is check out this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witchetty_grub
Needless to say no-one enjoyed it (apart from Tom who laughed so hard he just about cried) but I tried my best to be brave and didn't spit it out like some of the other contestants! Fortunately I didn't win as the winner had to finish off the head with a huge black eye, I guess this one certainly goes down as an 'experience'! (Michelle one of the other guests took some pics of the ordeal so if they turn out well I'll add them on later).

We have now headed up to Cape Tribulation for a few days, before back to Cairns for a couple more days before the Red Centre.

Bye for now.
